The Swiss company One Inside is responsible for the complete development for the relaunch of the website of the Swiss Federal Railways SBB. At the «Best of Swiss Web Award 2018» ceremony, SBB, together with contractors One Inside and Unic AG (responsible for front-end development), were awarded the «Master of Swiss Web 2018» award.
On behalf of the Swiss Federal Railways SBB, the partners One Inside and Unic have successfully launched the new responsive website sbb.ch. It was launched on schedule in April 2017. And now, in April 2018, the new web platform was awarded the title «Master of Swiss Web 2018» at the Best of Swiss Web Awards 2018.
The new SBB website has been optimized for all device types and screen sizes and presents the online offerings of the Swiss Federal Railways in a modern way. The Liestal-based technology company One Inside was responsible for the complete backend development of this relaunch. The new site is based on Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) as the central Content Management System (CMS) solution. With its many years of experience as an Adobe implementation partner, One Inside was able to tailor the functionalities of Adobe Experience Manager to the individual needs of SBB.
According to Netmetrix, the sbb.ch is the most visited website in Switzerland. Due to the high accesses volume – especially to the home page –performance optimization was the most important aspect during conception and development of the new website. Thanks to the scalability of the AEM infrastructure, it is possible to guarantee stable performance even at peak times.
Security precautions for the website of the Swiss Federal Railways also played a major role in the development process. With the integration of the SwissPass login, the basis for a uniform cross- system login procedure has been created. The website is exclusively delivered via its secure «https» encryption. This also created the basis for using the new HTTP 2 protocol to ensure possibilities for further performance optimizations in the future.
Since the SBB website offers a wide range of functions, e.g. timetable enquiries and ticket sales, the web project was complex: eight different SBB systems had to be integrated via various programming interfaces. This allows content such as the «Shops&Services» of various stations, Blog pages and rail station information to be displayed on the website. In addition, content is maintained in the central CMS. It is transmitted in turn to other systems, such as the station counters or the mobile App, via a real-time interface. Effective coordination with many stakeholders inside and outside SBB was essential. During the migration to the new website, existing functionalities had to be guaranteed. Accordingly, the old and new Website had to be run and tested in parallel on the same infrastructure.
The Adobe Experience Manager made it possible to seamlessly integrate the various interfaces of SBB. The ease of use of the CMS also allowed for rapid migration of content, which could be checked quickly and adapted ad hoc if necessary.
The scope and complexity of the project as well as the time frame represented a significant challenge. Thanks to the close interaction with the customer, the agile project approach and an extremely efficient team, One Inside was able to fully meet the requirements. In order to be able to successfully implement the relaunch, One Inside employed at times a team of 12 Web experts from various disciplines and locations.
